Although it uses the name clipart, this website also contains a large number
of photos – it covers a wide variety of subject areas including sport,
history, geography and science. (Note: this website generates a small
number of advertising pop-up windows which your browser may or may not block.)
Many American government organisations put their images into the public
domain which means that there are no problems with using these images in
an educational context. You can access these organisations directly or you can
go to image libraries which have collated the images for you. A good
example of an image library containing public domain images is Gimp-Savvy.com:
http://gimp-savvy.com/PHOTO-ARCHIVE/NASA/page1.html (NASA images)
http://gimp-savvy.com/PHOTO-ARCHIVE/NOAB/page1.html (NOAA images)
http://gimp-savvy.com/PHOTO-ARCHIVE/UFWS/page1.html (Fish and Wildlife Service images)
These are some of the original American public domain websites:
http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/collections.html (NOAA photo library)
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/index.html (NASA image gallery)
http://photo.itc.nps.gov/storage/images/index.html (National Parks
image gallery)
There are also some specialist websites that require a small
subscription to access the photos. These can then be freely used for
educational purposes. Two Geography examples are:
http://www.geographyphotos.com/schoolsindex.html (GeographyPhotos.com)
http://www.geointeractive.co.uk (GeoInteractive.co.uk Subscription Section)
